RABBI STERN INTRODUCING FRED SCHWARTZ, FOUNDER OF THE AUSCHWITZ JEWISH CENTER FOUNDATION | |
During World War II, the Nazis used the only surviving synagogue building as a munitions depot. After liberation, it became a house of worship once again used by about 70 survivors until the early 1950s, when most emigrated primarily to Israel and America. In 1977, the Communist Government nationalized and used the Chevra Lomdel Mishnayot Synagogue as a carpet warehouse. After identifying a crucial need for a Jewish cultural and educational center near Auschwitz, Mr. Schwartz organized the Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation. He is former chairman and CEO of the Fur Vault Inc., a preeminent retail fur business in the United States. Since retiring from business in 1987, he has dedicated himself to philanthropic endeavors. He is the chairman and founder of the Raoul Wallenberg Hebrew University. | ![]() |
