Barbara Fried, The discussion moderator. Social Worker and organizer of "The Second Generation Group at Temple Israel Reformed

Gail Klein: She was born in Displaced Person's Camp near Salzburg, Austria. Family is from Lithuania and Poland. Her mother escaped to Tashkent, but was interned in a Soviet labor camp. Her father fought in the Russian Army and the Partisans.

Abe Maiz: He was born in Brooklyn. His mother is from Lodz, Poland and was interned in a slave labor camp. His father is from Lithuania and was interned in a slave labor camp. His parents met at a German hospital where his mother was recovering.

Shelly Shore: She was born in Gdansk, Poland. Both her parents are from Lublin, Poland. Her father was interned in a slave labor camp. Her mother was a hidden child. They married after WWII. They left Poland for Israel in 1950 and then moved to Brooklyn in 1961.

Ruth Halaka: She was born in a Displaced Persons Camp, Bergen Belsen, Germany. Her mother was interned in the Auschwitz Concentration Camp, while her father was in a Soviet labor camp in Siberia during WWII.

Martin Krongold: He was born in the US. His maternal grandmother was Lutheran. Hence his mother came from a part Jewish-part Christian family. His mother was interned in a German labor camp. His father was first interned in a slave labor camp in Radonic, Poland, where he served on the Judenraat. Later, he escaped from the slave labor camp and pretended to be a Christian.

Common Experiences Growing Up As Children Of Holocaust Survivors
  • Their parents never talked directly about their experiences of the Holocaust
  • They had to learn the facts from their parents' friends
  • Their parents' friends became a substitute family, since their parents own relatives died during the Holocaust
  • Their parents were overprotective, while the children felt they had to protect their parents
