The Holocaust Star

A seven-foot-tall Star of David will help ensure that children in the Island's Hebrew schools will be able to teach about the tragedy of the Holocaust and prevent its reoccurrence.

Each of the six points and two middle sections of the star were decorated by students in the various synagogues' Hebrew schools and by the students of the Project Jacob Hebrew high school at the Jewish Community Center.

The students were instructed to use the theme of liberation to build their section but otherwise had carte blanche, said George Laufer, who brought the idea of the star to the other members of the Yom HaShoah Memorial Committee.

Project Jacob's centerpiece showed a Star of David superimposed over the flags of the United States and Israel. Barbed wire fences, outstretched hands and a dove of peace decorated the other sections.

The students of Temple Israel Reform Congregation of Staten Island pictured a soldier shining a light into the camps. The light was described as the heritage and the responsibility of all Jews.
